In 1919, President Samuel Palmer Brooks pioneered the idea of establishing a Business School at Baylor. The efforts finally bore fruits in 1923, when the board accepted President Brook’s recommendations and authorized him to take the necessary steps towards establishing a department of business administration. The board once again approved the establishment of a new business department and named the school as the School of Commerce and Business Administration due to the rise in university enrollment. The School offered its first Bachelor’s degree in 1924. In 1926, the School shifted into a wooden building in the campus. Dr. Lang worked towards raising the standards of the curriculum to acquire AACSB accreditation and the School achieved full accreditation in 1959. The necessity for more space led to construction of a new building and Earl Hankamer, one of the board members contributed $500,000 to cover the costs of construction. In 1960, the building was completed and the School’s name was changed to Hankamer School of Business.

The School’s focus is to develop committed future business leaders with integrity and purpose. Experiential Learning, Principled Leadership and Commitment towards community are the three principles of the School, which set it apart from other Business Schools. Define…Discover…Deliver is the theme for the entire core curriculum of the MBA program. Students, who do not have an undergraduate degree in Business, have the opportunity to enroll themselves into the Business Foundation Course, where they are introduced to the basic concepts of business. The School offers specializations in Entrepreneurship and Healthcare Administration, which are embedded in its MBA program, so that students are able to get a grasp of the industry and business function that, correspond to their long term goals. Students, who either want to start a new venture or expand their business, are highly benefitted through the Entrepreneurship specialization. The program focuses on ‘learning by doing” thus, teaching students to be innovative and transforming their ideas into successful business venture. New Venture Creation and Corporate Entrepreneurship are the main areas of study in this specialization where students learn to create value through innovation.
Focus Firm Project, Venture Capital Associates Class and Portfolio Management Practicum are some of the initiatives which ingrain Experiential Learning into the program. Students are introduced to the goals and culture of Focus firms by the company’s executives. Students have researched in teams over company mandated projects and provided viable recommendations for companies like Dell, 3M, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Walmart and several such esteemed companies in the recent past. Students get the opportunity to visit G-51 Capital Management, LLC in Austin as part of the Venture Capital Associates course. Here, they analyze the various investment plans and provide valuable recommendations to G-51 managers. Students participating in the Portfolio Management Practicum get the exposure of managing a portfolio worth $5 million investment and learn the various tools and techniques used by professional Portfolio Managers.
The program inculcates ethics and integrity among its students, so that they adhere to these principles while taking business decisions in future and become principled business leaders. Outside the classroom, the School sponsors the MBA Case Competition in Ethical Leadership in collaboration with the annual Dale. P. Jones Business Ethics Forum.
The School believes in rendering services to the community and its Prison Entrepreneurship Program PEP is one such unique initiative. The Baylor students are encouraged to impart business knowledge to inmates of the prison, so that they have the necessary skills to start their business venture once they come out of the prison.
The Study Abroad trips offered by the School help students to understand the complexities of the global marketplace and help them to take correct business decisions in leadership roles in the future. The Immersion Into International Interdisciplinary Innovation i5 program gives the opportunity to its students to lead interdisciplinary cross-cultural teams on challenging consulting projects of China. Students travel to Zambia and lead a team of students from Northrise University while examining a business challenge of the sponsor company as a part of the Africa Global Initiative. Students learn to develop a business strategy, assess the target markets, and evaluate the risks associated with the strategy. After two weeks of stay in Zambia, students return back to the US and provide assistance over the projects to the students of Northrise University.
The John F. Baugh Center for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise fosters the entrepreneurial initiatives of the students by supporting them in their start-up ventures. The Center works towards enhancing the networking and leadership capabilities of the students which is fruitful for their new ventures.
The School is situated at the heart of Texas, Waco. Waco’s McLane Stadium is a regular visit among football lovers. The Cottonbelt Trail is a place that offers biking, walking and other outdoor exercising activities. The Cameron Park Zoo is a must visit for animal and nature lovers. The metropolitan area of the city offers numerous restaurants, facilities for shopping and a variety of cultural events.
The Career Management Center focuses on instilling life-long career management skills and not just securing immediate employment opportunities. The School offers two Professional Development Courses as a part of the curriculum so that the students are able to assess and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and work towards overcoming these weaknesses. Students are able to explore their career aspirations, search for internship opportunities that fit into their goals, and improve their leadership and communication skills through these courses. The entire course results in enhanced employment opportunities for the students. The Baylor Business Network helps students in connecting with the Baylor alumni and widening their professional network. Students get to interact with top corporate leaders and business executives during the MBA Leadership Summit, which is integral to the Professional Development Course. This event is an eye-opener for the students as they indulge in a Case Study, where they identify and analyze the issues with the specific company, and provide resolutions to their problems. The HSB Office of Career Management provides a variety of tools and resources for its students to establish their personal brand, create winning resumes, and prepare for the interview. Students are trained to answer behavioral and case interview questions with tact.
