The Graduate Research Center of the Southwest was chartered by co-founders of Texas Instruments Cecil H. Green, J. Erik Jonsson and Eugene McDermott in 1961. The Coordinating Board of the Texas College and University System (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board ) recommended the establishment of an upper-level, public university in Dallas in mid 1960s. In 1967, the institute acquired a new name Southwest Center for Advanced Studies. Morris Hite, a prominent business leader in Dallas, pioneered the effort to transform the small research center into a major university. In September 1969, The Southwest Center for Advanced Studies became The University of Texas at Dallas. In 1983, the Morris Hite Center for Marketing Science was founded in his honor. The School of Management came into being in 1975.
The Jindal School of Management’s mission is to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing, technology-driven, global society by partnering with the business community to: • Conduct research enhancing management knowledge • Deliver high-quality management education to a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students and practicing executives • Develop, innovate and continuously improve programs advancing management education and practice.
The UT Dallas MBA program aims at developing the thought process of the students and transforming them into strategic business leaders. The School boasts of a supportive team of faculty who guide the students throughout their stay at UT through The Power of Two Mentor program. During this program, the Mentor serves as a guide and role model for the student when the student begins to explore the business world beyond the confines of the classroom. The mentor provides useful insights into the ways a business is conducted and the best business practices currently practiced in the industry. Students leverage upon the examples and experiences drawn by the mentors that facilitates their professional growth. The cohort class structure comprising of 60 students results in long lasting bonds and facilitates knowledge sharing and fosters a collaborative approach among students. Students can choose concentrations, which are a bunch of elective courses catering to a particular functional area of business. These concentration courses further develop the analytical and decision-making skills of the students enabling them to take critical decisions, when faced with crucial business challenges.
The office of International Student Exchange ISE and Foreign Study Program FSP in Jindal School of Management JSOM are committed towards providing global exposure to the students of the institute. JSOM has conducted 35 faculty led foreign study trips in 16 countries for the past 15 years. Students enrich their learning by visiting foreign countries, making international company visits and interacting with business executives and government officials. Students enhance their global awareness by participating in the cultural activities and attending seminars organized by multinational corporations. JSOM aims at building a global perspective on business issues in its students through its international study trips, international exchange and study abroad programs.
The Leadership Center of the School aims at creating ethical leaders who serve the business, society and government with honesty and fairness. The Center is committed to creating such leaders through its classroom learning, workshops, and rigorous field and academic research. The School believes that leaders are in positions of power and they must use it fruitfully for the benefit of the society. The School ingrains this thought process in each student, thus developing ethical philosophies for sustainable organizations that create economic as well as social values.
The Center for Information Technology and Management CITM collaborates with IT companies in an attempt to expose the students to the advanced technology and state-of-the-art tools and resources that would provide them hands-on experience of working in a real-world business scenario.
The Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation fosters the entrepreneurial spirit among the students by encouraging them to come up with unique business ideas and create their own ventures. The institute promotes cross-disciplinary academic research and outreach programs with the intention to educate its students to develop innovative solutions and create viable businesses.
The main campus is in the heart of Richardson, Texas, 18 miles north of downtown Dallas. Dallas relied on farming in its earlier days, but by 1900, Dallas had the largest inland cotton market in the world. In the 1930s, Dallas consolidated its position in the petroleum market with petroleum discoveries in the Permian Basin, the Panhandle, the Gulf Coast and Oklahoma. The city today is referred as the heart of the “Silicon Prairie” due to the high concentration of Telecom companies in the region. Texas Instruments, Nortel Networks, Alcatel Lucent, AT&T, Ericsson are some of the major companies that have their roots here. The Arts District in the northern section of downtown is home to several art avenues like the Dallas Museum of Art, the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center and the Nasher Sculpture Center. The Winspear Opera House, Texas Ballet Theatre, the Dee and Charles Wyle Theatre and the Dallas Black Dance Theatre are some of the venues, where operas and ballets are performed regularly.
The Career Management Center CMC is a subset of UT Dallas Career Center and has strong bonding with the DFW business community that proves to be advantageous for the students. The DFW business community houses several Fortune 500 companies, thus increasing the internship opportunities and full-time employment chances for the students. CMC provides personalized career coaching to the students, helping them choose the career path that best aligns with their goals and skills. There are workshops organized regularly, where the students are trained on effective job hunt techniques, building winning resumes and leveraging their professional networks. The mock interview sessions with the career experts prepare the students for a vast spectrum of questions on the behavioral or professional front. The Information Sessions by the potential employers provide insights into the work culture of the company, thus enabling the students to learn about the company before deciding to take on the offer.
