The University was founded in 1851 as a preparatory school. Later, financial problems led to its shutdown during the Civil War. Entrepreneur John Sergeant Pillsbury pioneered the efforts to reopen the institution. In 1867, the School reopened as the state’s land grant institution and went on to be one of the most prized possessions of the state. William Watts Folwell went on to become the first president of the University in 1869. The Carlson School of Management was founded in 1919 in response to the requests from the business community of Twin Cities- Minneapolis and St. Paul. The first MBA degree was conferred in 1937 and the School acquired AACSB accreditation in 1963.

The Carlson Consulting Experience CCE is an opportunity for the students to provide solutions to the business challenges faced by Fortune 500 companies, mid-size and non-profit organizations. Students collaborate and work in teams over live projects and develop a structured approach to solve the business problems. The Carlson Funds Enterprise CFE manages two funds – a capitalization growth fund and a fixed income fund that combine an asset of over $35 million. The Carlson Ventures Enterprise CVE nourishes the entrepreneurship potential of the students by encouraging them to create and implement their business ideas. Students develop a global perspective and cross-cultural competence through the short-term Global Enrichment trips and a capstone Global Discovery experience. Students collaborate with high-profile professionals from multinational companies and learn about the diversity of the global marketplace by engaging in new business practices followed in other companies across the world. Global Enrichment Programs are accelerated study abroad programs where students make visits to local and multinational companies and learn about the different facets of business.
