Western Reserve College was established in 1826 in Hudson, Ohio, around 30 miles southeast of Cleveland. The college was earlier called as Western Reserve of Connecticut due to its location. The end of the 19th century saw the advent of financial growth and development at Cleveland, Ohio. The college moved to its current location “uptown, Cleveland” with the financial aid from American industrialist Amasa Stone and its name got changed to Western Reserve University.
Developing transformational ideas and outstanding leaders for the advancement of business and society.
The three distinctive themes- leadership, business as an agent of world benefit, and manage by designing are ingrained in the core curriculum of the school. The MBA program equips students with managerial skills to meet today’s business requirements and anticipate tomorrow’s business challenges. The program encourages students to come up with innovative solutions to business issues, and evolves them as better leaders and decision-makers. Innovation is interwoven with the entire curriculum by encouraging students to challenge the standard protocols, experiment with the design practices, and develop powerful solutions. The small class size structure enables students to interact more with the faculty, who share insights into their experiences and research in the field of management studies.
Leadership Assessment and Development (LEAD) program conducts a series of assessments to discover the areas of strengths and weaknesses of each student. A personal learning plan is prepared based on the assessment results to help the students improve in their areas of weaknesses.
The course gives the opportunity to its students to engage with area executives over the business challenges encountered by their organizations. This is a platform for students to implement the core business skills they acquired in the first year and to learn the approach to solve complex business issues from experienced business executives.
Apart from adding business value, the program also focuses on the social and environmental impact of the business solution. The students are encouraged to come up with sustainable business solutions which add social as well as environmental value.
Appreciative Inquiry and Sustainable Value are ingrained in the projects, corporate products and education programs of the Fowler Center for Business. The concept of Appreciative Inquiry helps students to leverage the strengths of the businesses and systems and combine it with their individual strengths to create a synergistic effect. The focus has shifted from shareholder value to Sustainable Value due to the demand of the new external environment that is characterized by depleting natural resources, radical transparency and rising expectations.
Weatherhead rests in the heart of Cleveland. Its arts and cultural district University Circle comprises of 15 museums and cultural institutions like the Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Museum of Art, four medical centers, and 8 education centers. The students at Weatherhead can walk down to Uptown, which has a specialty market, numerous restaurants, pubs, and the campus bookstore.
The career coaches at Weatherhead guide the students in selecting the company from the list of recruiting companies, based on the student’s long term career plans. The Career Management Office hosts workshops that enhance the students interviewing skills and teach them efficient job search techniques. The mock interview sessions are conducted in alignment with the student’s background and employer’s requirement, thus providing insights into the probable questions that could be asked by the employers. The career fairs give the exposure to a plethora of organizations from varied industries, so that the student can choose the company where he wants to work based on his area of interest. The Employer Information Sessions are held at the campus, where the students can know about the internships and full- time job openings in the organization.
