• One tap empties the tank in 12 hours.
• Another empties it in 6 hours.
• A filling tap can fill it in 24 hours.
• The tank is initially two-thirds full.

The rates are:

• First tap empties at 1/12 of the tank per hour.
• Second tap empties at 1/6 of the tank per hour.
• The filling tap adds 1/24 of the tank per hour.

Combined rate = –1/12 – 1/6 + 1/24 = –1/12 – 2/12 + 1/24 = –3/12 + 1/24 = –5/24.

Since emptying is considered positive here, the effective work is 1/24 + 1/6 – 1/12 = 1/8 per hour.

The tank needs only 2/3 of the work (because it is already partly full).

So, time taken = (2/3) ÷ (1/8) = 16/3 hours = 5 hours 20 minutes.
