Step 1: Read the COMPLETE sentence and get the CORE meaning. The sentence tells us that after the coach spoke to the team at halftime, they performed “much better.” This means the coach did something positive to help their spirit.
Step 2: Set a BROAD EXPECTATION from the correct answer choice(s). Based on the core meaning, we expect a word that means “improved,” “lifted,” or “consoled” the team’s spirit so they could play better.
Step 3: Eliminate!
- indulged: (To yield to a desire). Does not fit our expectation.
- solaced: (To give comfort or consolation). This does not match our expectation. Trap.
- evoked: (To call forth a memory or feeling). Fits our expectation.
- boxed: (To confine). Definitely does not fit.
- coddled: (To treat overprotectively). Not the right tone for a coach improving performance.
