The video below and the theory that follows give you a focused recap of our Mind Map Approach for attempting RC, show you how to apply it to inference-based GRE Reading Comprehension questions, and then demonstrate its use on GRE-style questions with representative answer choices so you gain direct experience with the method. Take your time, pause the video to apply the approach on your own, study each explanation carefully, and by the end, develop a clear habit of using the Mind Map Approach for inference-based Reading Comprehension across your GRE drills, GRE sectional tests, and GRE full tests.
In a previous lesson, we learnt the Mind Map Approach for handling GRE Reading Comprehension questions, and this lesson builds smoothly on that learning. As a part of our GRE preparation course, the Mind Map Approach has supported tens of thousands of students worldwide since 2008. With clear understanding and steady practice, this approach helps you engage with GRE Reading Comprehension in a structured way that supports both accuracy and pace.

Before moving ahead, here is a brief refresh of the Mind Map Approach –
Begin by skimming the first byte of the passage, which means one logical unit you can grasp in a single look, without entering details. Ask yourself what this byte does and keep the takeaway short. Move to the next byte, ask the same question, and keep that takeaway short as well. Link the takeaways as you move forward and repeat this process for each new byte to create a clear mental map of the passage. After that, read the question and use a grid to remove incorrect answer choices and each the correct one.

GRE Reading Comprehension questions broadly fall into three types: structure-based, fact-based, and inference-based. The Mind Map Approach supports all three. In this lesson, the focus is on applying the Mind Map Approach to inference-based Reading Comprehension questions. These questions require you to go beyond what is directly stated and draw deductions that logically follow from the passage. The mind map you build helps you track ideas, relationships, and progression in the passage, while also making it clear where specific information sits, so you know exactly which part of the passage to return to when drawing inferences that stay fully supported by the text, without drifting away from what the text supports.
Below is a snapshot of the GRE style Inference based Reading Comprehension question discussed in the video, along with the Mind Map approach used to solve it and the Mind Map created for the passage.
