Here, you work with contrast at a high level of complexity by reading rich, idea dense sentences that require sustained attention. In each sentence, you choose between two underlined options by tracking meaning and direction as the idea develops.

Example 1

Not enthused / incurious about the possibility of pursuing pediatrics as a specialization, Dr. Tomei arranged to shadow the head of the hospital’s pediatrics department for two weeks but soon found that she had little natural affinity for working with children.

Step 1: Look for the contrast trigger. The sentence starts with the word “Not” and contains the word “but”.
Step 2: Analyze the second part of the sentence. Dr. Tomei arranged to shadow a doctor for two weeks, which shows she was interested or curious initially.
Step 3: Choose the word that completes the phrase “Not ____.” Since she was curious, the opposite is “incurious.”
Correct Answer: incurious.

Example 2

Never one to be content with / disappointed by a partial victory, Karl, nevertheless, was forced to accept that he was highly unlikely to be able to defeat Smith in the chess championship final and strategized to played for a draw.

Step 1: Identify the contrast triggers: “Never” and “nevertheless”.
Step 2: Look at Karl’s action. He is accepting a draw, which is a partial victory, even though it is not his usual style.
Step 3: The word “nevertheless” tells us that his usual nature is the opposite of accepting a draw. Therefore, he is usually “never one to be content with” a partial victory.
Correct Answer: content with.

Example 3

Anything but an enthusiastic opponent / proponent of German unification, Otto von Bismark, as Prime Minister of Prussia, engineered the formation of the German Empire because he became convinced that unification, despite his disinclination, was inevitable and the best course of action was for Prussia to initiate, and thus, dominate the process.

Step 1: Identify the trigger “Anything but.” Remember that this phrase means “not at all”.
Step 2: Look at the word “disinclination.” This means Bismark did not actually want unification.
Step 3: If he did not want it, he was not a supporter. To say he was “not at all a supporter,” we use the word “proponent”.
Correct Answer: proponent.

Example 4

In The Merchant of Venice, Portia, though not genuinely reluctant / eager to wed Bassanio, must initially feign indifference towards his proposal, as her groom must be selected per her father’s stipulations, and showing personal favor to any candidate would be considered improper.

Step 1: Identify the contrast triggers: “though” and “not”.
Step 2: The sentence says Portia must “feign indifference” (pretend she does not care) because she cannot show “personal favor”.
Step 3: If she is pretending to be indifferent, it means she actually wants to marry him. Therefore, she is “not genuinely reluctant”.
Correct Answer: reluctant.

Example 5

Unwilling to remain content working within his niche, yet not ready to venture outside his comfort zone as a performer, the comedian seemed to be caught in a position of perpetual artistic impasse / fecundity.

Step 1: Identify the contrast trigger: “yet”.
Step 2: The comedian is “unwilling” to stay where he is, but “not ready” to move forward.
Step 3: Because he is stuck between two options and cannot move, he is in an “impasse” (a deadlock) rather than “fecundity” (creativity/growth).
Correct Answer: impasse.

Example 6

The same farm owners who owed the health of their ventures to the generous subsidies provided by the central government, now, naturally / paradoxically, demand a substantial loosening of restrictions on commercial agricultural practices, citing fear of governmental overinvolvement.

Step 1: Analyze the situation. The farmers received help (subsidies) from the government.
Step 2: Now, those same farmers are complaining about government “overinvolvement”.
Step 3: It is surprising or contradictory that people who rely on the government for money would then ask the government to stay out of their business. This is a paradox.
Correct Answer: paradoxically.
