During your first year you will traverse a dense set of core courses—Financial Reporting & Control, Corporate Finance, Analytics for Decision Making, Marketing Management, Operations, Leadership Ventures, and more. Instead of passively absorbing lectures, use each course to craft measurable deliverables. For instance, in Analytics for Decision Making you might build a predictive model using real-world data; in Marketing you might design a go-to-market plan for a start-up customer segment; in Leadership Ventures you might reflect on how you adapted to ambiguity and deliver your personal leadership narrative. Document these artifacts—what challenge you engaged with, your role, the method, the result—and store them as part of your career portfolio.
In the second year, Wharton offers majors like Finance, Marketing, Strategic Management, Business Analytics, Healthcare Management, Social Impact & Responsibility, Entrepreneurism & Innovation, and more. Pick one or two majors that directly align with your target role. If your post-MBA aim is fintech product management, select majors Business Analytics and Strategic Management, and pick electives such as Machine Learning for Business, Fintech Ventures, and Digital Strategy. For each elective identify a challenge you will tackle—perhaps a micro-internship with a fintech start-up, a corporate partner case or your own venture prototype—and treat it as your signature project.
Wharton’s global offerings include Global Modular Courses, Global Immersion Program and International Study Programs. Choose an immersion aligned with your target region or industry—perhaps a supply-chain expedition to Southeast Asia, a health-care immersion in Europe, or a strategy module in Latin America—and ensure you deliver a clear output: a client proposal, a market entry roadmap or a cross-border team analysis. Treat the immersion as a professional consulting engagement: form your team early, define roles, set milestones, deliver a client-grade output and present it as evidence in your portfolio and interviews.
Your cohort is structured into Learning Teams and clusters—small cross-functional groups that you will work with across core courses and beyond. Early in term one, form your core team of peers and consciously rotate leadership roles across projects. Use the time to sharpen your ability to influence, collaborate and deliver under ambiguity. At the same time build relationships beyond your team—engage with seniors in the class above, join key clubs aligned to your target function (for example Fintech Club, Healthcare Club, Social Impact Club, Consulting & Corporate Strategy Club) and participate in case-competitions or speaker series. Treat each activity as networking and leadership practice.
By graduation you should have three to five deliverables you can walk into an interview with, each aligned to your target role and evidence of value delivered. These might include: a fintech venture prototype developed during the elective, a consulting project undertaken in your global immersion, a data-analytics model used during your internship, and your leadership achievement as president of the Consulting Club or Social Impact initiative. For each deliverable maintain the structure: context (business challenge), your role, methodology, outcome (quantified where possible) and relevance (how this links to your post-MBA target). Build a one-page executive summary for each and a 60-second verbal version for interviews.
Wharton’s summer internship (approximately 3.5 months) is the bridge between your academic venture and your post-MBA career. Start setting internship targets from day one: which companies, which functions, which geography? Use Wharton’s Career Management Office tools, alumni network and company treks. Secure a role that reflects your target function. Once selected, treat the internship like a full-time year-one output: deliver measurable results, collect feedback, build relationships, and turn that experience into a story you will tell in interviews. Include your internship deliverable in your portfolio as a top-tier artifact.

Build a carefully curated target list of alumni aligned with your post-MBA goals: list 30-40 contacts in your target industry and geography. For each, craft a personal outreach story referencing one of your signature deliverables, your post-MBA goal and a specific ask (info-interview, referral, insight). After each conversation send a brief summary of the discussion and next step. Track outcomes: number of conversations, referrals received, interview invites triggered.
Beyond the functional skills you build, leadership is central to your Wharton journey. Set aside an hour each month to reflect: Which leadership behaviours have I grown? What unexpected challenge did I face and how did I respond? What will I focus next month? Keep a leadership journal. Use feedback from your Learning Team, elective projects and internships. Anchoring those reflections into your story strengthens your interview narrative and your self-awareness.
In your final semester align your resume, LinkedIn profile, portfolio of deliverables, interview stories and references around your post-MBA vision. Secure two strong champions: a faculty member who guided your major or signature project, and a supervisor from your summer internship or global immersion. Craft a concise story linking your pre-MBA background, your Wharton deliverables and your future impact. Interview-ready narrative might sound like: “During my Wharton MBA I led the development of a machine-learning churn-prediction model for a fintech start-up (role: team lead; result: 12% projected reduction in churn).
